EMDR Therapy for Trauma and Addiction Recovery in Carlsbad, California
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, is one of the most extensively researched and clinically validated therapies available for trauma processing. Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR has demonstrated effectiveness across a broad range of conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD, addiction, and complex trauma. At Worthy Wellness Center in Carlsbad, EMDR is a core clinical modality integrated into our trauma-informed treatment framework across all levels of care.
EMDR works by engaging the brain’s natural information-processing system through bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help clients reprocess traumatic memories and reduce the emotional charge they carry. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require clients to narrate their trauma in extensive detail or relive experiences verbally. The bilateral stimulation activates the brain’s processing mechanisms in a way that allows traumatic memories to be integrated rather than stored as ongoing sources of dysregulation, without requiring the verbal exposure that many clients find retraumatizing.
At Worthy Wellness, EMDR is delivered by trained therapists who calibrate the pace and focus of each session to the client’s current nervous system window of tolerance. It works alongside somatic experiencing, affect regulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and other trauma-informed modalities to address trauma at every level it operates, neurological, physiological, and psychological.
How EMDR Therapy Works at Worthy Wellness Center
What to Expect
EMDR therapy follows a structured protocol developed through decades of clinical research and practice. Sessions begin with preparation work that builds the client’s internal resources and nervous system stability before trauma processing begins. This preparation phase is not rushed because the quality of the processing phase depends entirely on the stability of the foundation it rests on. Clients who are not yet ready for active trauma processing continue to build regulatory capacity until that readiness is established.
Active EMDR processing involves the client focusing on a specific memory, belief, or emotional response while the therapist facilitates bilateral stimulation. The client follows the therapist’s guidance while allowing whatever emerges to surface without judgment or effort. After each set of bilateral stimulation, the therapist checks in and the process continues until the emotional charge of the memory has reduced significantly and a more adaptive belief about the experience can be installed. Sessions typically end with a containment exercise that supports nervous system stability between appointments.
Conditions EMDR Treats at Worthy Wellness
EMDR is a primary treatment modality for PTSD and complex trauma, including childhood trauma, relational trauma, sexual trauma, and trauma associated with experiences of discrimination, loss, or chronic adversity. For clients where trauma is driving or maintaining substance use disorders, EMDR addresses the underlying traumatic material that self-medication has been managing, removing one of the most significant drivers of relapse.
EMDR is also effective for anxiety disorders where specific triggering memories or experiences are maintaining the anxiety response, for depression with a trauma history, for OCD where intrusive thoughts are connected to traumatic or distressing experiences, and for dual diagnosis presentations where trauma, mental health conditions, and substance use are all present and interacting.
For clients in our Partial Hospitalization Program or Intensive Outpatient Program, EMDR is integrated into the individual therapy component of the treatment schedule, coordinated with the broader clinical team so that the processing work in EMDR sessions is supported by the full range of modalities available at Worthy Wellness.

EMDR as Part of Worthy Wellness's Trauma-Informed Treatment Model
EMDR is most powerful when it operates within a comprehensive clinical framework that addresses trauma at every level simultaneously. At Worthy Wellness, EMDR is integrated with somatic experiencing for body-based trauma release, affect regulation for nervous system stability, and polyvagal-informed therapy for rebuilding the social engagement and relational safety that trauma disrupts. This combination addresses the cognitive, somatic, and relational dimensions of trauma that EMDR alone, or any single modality alone, cannot fully reach.
For clients whose trauma presentations include significant nervous system dysregulation, vagus nerve stimulation supports the parasympathetic regulatory capacity that makes EMDR processing more effective and more tolerable. Neuropsychological testing at intake establishes the cognitive baseline that informs how EMDR sessions are paced, and genetic testing informs any medication decisions that support the neurological stability EMDR requires.
Getting started with EMDR therapy at Worthy Wellness begins with an initial consultation and clinical assessment. From there, our team designs a personalized treatment plan that incorporates EMDR alongside the other modalities and levels of care most appropriate for your situation. We serve clients from Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar, La Jolla, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Oceanside, and throughout San Diego County.

Worthy Wellness Center is Joint Commission accredited and certified by the California Department of Health Care Services. I had a really good experience at this treatment center. I came in struggling with PTSD, and the staff were kind, supportive, and always made me feel heard. They worked hard to meet my needs and helped connect me with outside services when needed. I never felt ignored or overlooked. The staff truly cared and went out of their way to help whenever I needed it. The small group setting made it easier to feel comfortable, and the weekend outings were one of the best parts. The food was good, and the environment felt safe and welcoming. This program helped me build a strong foundation and gave me the tools to handle everyday challenges. I’m very grateful for the care and support I received and feel more prepared to live life on life’s terms. difficult time much easier for our family. The team was always willing to answer questions. Worthy Wellness has done a terrific job of treating my clients for a variety of addictions. Holly is smart and amazing at helping with intake and transition. The staff is compassionate and insightful, and they make everyone feel welcome. Their dual diagnosis program is uniquely effective. The facilities are beautiful and well maintained. They coordinate and communicate well with the courts, which prevents problems on the legal side.
I recommend this center very highly, and send them any of my clients that need rehabilitation.
