Definition, Types, Timelines](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/therapy/): Therapy — also called psychotherapy or talk therapy — is a structured, evidence-based clinical treatment in which a licensed mental health professional helps individuals identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
- [Social Anxiety Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/social-anxiety-disorder/): Social anxiety disorder (SAD) — formerly called social phobia — is a persistent fear of social or performance situations where a person expects scrutiny, judgment, or humiliation from others. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 7.1% of U.S. adults experienced social anxiety disorder in the past year, with prevalence higher in females (8.0%) than males (6.1%).
- [Borderline Personality Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/borderline-personality-disorder/): Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness that severely disrupts a person's ability to regulate emotions, maintain stable relationships, and sustain a consistent sense of identity. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), BPD affects approximately 1.4% of U.S. adults, with nearly 80% of those diagnosed reporting a history of suicide attempts — making early, accurate treatment a medical priority, not merely a lifestyle concern.
- [Major Depressive Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/major-depressive-disorder/): Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a clinical mental health condition characterized by persistent depressed mood or loss of interest that causes significant impairment in daily functioning. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 21 million U.S. adults — 8.3% of the adult population — experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2021. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 280 million people live with depression, making it the leading cause of disability worldwide. Despite its prevalence, WHO reports that in high-income countries, only about one third of people with depression receive treatment — a gap that makes early recognition critical.
- [Panic Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment and Management](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/panic-disorder/): Panic disorder is an anxiety condition defined by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks followed by at least one month of persistent concern about future attacks, significant worry about their implications, or maladaptive behavioral changes resulting from them.
- [Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/generalized-anxiety-disorder/): Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a persistent mental health condition characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday situations lasting six months or more, affecting approximately 3.1% of adults annually and 5.7% at some point in their lives (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023). This chronic anxiety disorder differs from normal worry through its pathological interference with daily functioning, causing significant distress across multiple life domains including work, relationships, and social activities. GAD represents one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders within the broader anxiety spectrum, distinguished by its generalized nature rather than specific phobic triggers, with diagnostic criteria requiring persistent worry occurring more days than not for at least six months. The disorder's comprehensive impact encompasses physical symptoms like muscle tension and fatigue, cognitive symptoms including difficulty concentrating, and behavioral changes that substantially reduce quality of life, necessitating evidence-based treatment approaches including cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacological interventions.
- [Adderall: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/adderall/): Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant composed of mixed amphetamine salts that the FDA approves for treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy — and when misused, it carries a clinically recognized risk for dependence, addiction, and overdose. According to SAMHSA's 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 3.7 million people aged 12 or older misused prescription stimulants in the past year, with Adderall accounting for the largest share of that misuse.
- [Bipolar Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diagnosis, Treatment and Management](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/bipolar-disorder/): Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels — cycling between periods of extremely elevated or irritable mood (manic or hypomanic episodes) and periods of profound sadness or hopelessness (depressive episodes). An estimated 2.8% of U.S. adults — approximately 7 million people — experience bipolar disorder in any given year, with prevalence nearly equal between males (2.9%) and females (2.8%). (NIMH)
- [Marijuana (Cannabis): Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/marijuana/): Marijuana is a psychoactive cannabis plant product containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the primary compound responsible for its intoxicating effects — that disrupts the brain's endocannabinoid system and, with repeated use, produces the tolerance, physical dependence, and compulsive use patterns that define cannabis use disorder (CUD).
- [Hydrocodone: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/hydrocodone/): Hydrocodone is a semisynthetic opioid that relieves pain by binding to mu-opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, while also producing dopamine-driven euphoria that contributes to its high misuse potential.
- [Morphine: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/morphine/): Morphine is a naturally derived opioid analgesic extracted from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) that binds to mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system to block pain — and simultaneously activates the brain's dopamine reward circuit in a way that makes physical dependence and addiction a serious clinical risk.
- [Gambling Addiction: Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment and Prevention](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/behavioral-addiction/gambling/): Gambling addiction — clinically diagnosed as gambling disorder — is the only behavioral addiction formally classified under Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5, reflecting its shared neurobiological mechanisms with drug and alcohol dependencies.
- [What is Behavioral Addiction? Definition, Types, Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/behavioral-addiction/): Behavioral addiction — also called a process addiction — is a compulsive pattern of engagement in a rewarding behavior that produces loss of control, escalation, and continued participation despite serious negative consequences, driven by the same dopamine reward pathways that underlie substance use disorders. Gambling disorder is the only behavioral addiction officially recognized in the DSM-5, yet an estimated 2.5 million U.S. adults meet criteria for a severe gambling problem annually, with 5 to 8 million more exhibiting significant problematic behavior. (NCPG)
- [Sex Addiction: Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment and Prevention](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/behavioral-addiction/sex/): Sex addiction — clinically termed compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) — is a condition involving persistent failure to control intense, repetitive sexual urges or behaviors despite significant distress or impairment in personal, social, occupational, or other areas of functioning. The World Health Organization officially recognized CSBD in the ICD-11 (code 6C72) as an impulse control disorder, requiring symptoms to persist for six months or more.
- [Internet Addiction: Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment and Prevention](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/behavioral-addiction/internet/): Internet addiction — also called problematic internet use (PIU) or internet use disorder (IUD) — is a behavioral condition defined by an inability to control online activity, resulting in clinically significant distress or impairment across social, academic, or occupational functioning. Research places the prevalence of internet addiction disorder at 1.5–8.2% among adults in the United States and Europe, rising to 7.9–16.0% among adolescents globally (PMC, 2022).
- [Food Addiction: Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment and Prevention](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/behavioral-addiction/food/): Food addiction is a compulsive, neurobiological disorder in which a person loses control over eating certain highly processed foods despite repeated negative consequences to their health, relationships, and daily functioning. Researchers estimate that 14% of adults and 15% of youth globally meet criteria for UPF addiction, with a 2023 University of Michigan poll finding that 1 in 8 Americans over age 50 show clear signs of food addiction — figures that rival alcohol and tobacco use rates. (Current Obesity Reports, 2024; University of Michigan / ScienceDaily, 2023)
- [What Is A Mental Health Condition? Definition, Types, Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/): A mental health condition is a diagnosable disorder involving significant changes in thinking, emotion, or behavior that cause distress or impair daily functioning — and that meet clinical criteria established by the DSM-5 or ICD-11. In 2024, 23.4% of U.S. adults — 61.5 million people — had any mental illness (AMI) in the past year, yet only 52.1% of those individuals received any mental health treatment. (SAMHSA 2024 NSDUH) Globally, more than 1 billion people are living with a mental health disorder, and mental conditions represent the second leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. (WHO, 2025)
- [PTSD: Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diagnosis, Treatment and Management](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/mental-health/ptsd/): Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition that develops after exposure to a terrifying, dangerous, or life-threatening event. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 12 million adults in the United States have PTSD during any given year, and about 6% of the population will experience PTSD at some point in their lifetime. The disorder is not a sign of weakness — it is a diagnosable medical condition with well-established, highly effective treatments.
- [What Is Drug Addiction? Definition, Types, Symptoms, Causes, Effects & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/): Drug addiction is a chronic brain disorder characterized by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences — driven by neurobiological changes in the brain's reward, motivation, and decision-making pathways that impair a person's ability to control their behavior. Per the DSM-5, healthcare professionals diagnose it formally as substance use disorder (SUD), a medical condition that requires professional treatment rather than willpower alone.
- [Xanax Addiction: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Dependence & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/xanax/): Xanax (alprazolam) is a short-acting benzodiazepine that enhances GABA-mediated CNS inhibition to produce rapid sedation and anxiety relief — but its potency, short half-life, and widespread prescription make it the most commonly misused benzodiazepine in the United States and a frequent driver of physical dependence even in patients who take it exactly as prescribed.
- [Benzodiazepine Addiction: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Dependence & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/benzodiazepines/): Benzodiazepines are a class of prescription CNS depressants that enhance the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain to produce sedation, anxiety relief, muscle relaxation, and seizure suppression — and while they represent some of the most widely prescribed medications in the United States, they also carry well-documented risks of physical dependence, life-threatening withdrawal, and overdose that intensify sharply when combined with opioids.
- [Cocaine: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/cocaine/): Cocaine is a Schedule II stimulant derived from the coca plant that blocks dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine reuptake to produce intense but short-lived euphoria — and its brief duration of action creates a binge cycle that drives rapid psychological addiction.
- [Methamphetamine: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/methamphetamine/): Methamphetamine is a powerful synthetic stimulant that floods the brain with dopamine at levels 3–5 times higher than cocaine, producing intense euphoria followed by a crash that drives compulsive re-dosing and rapid addiction onset.
- [Alcohol: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/alcohol/): Alcohol is a CNS depressant and the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the United States — and its social and legal normalization masks a public health crisis in which nearly 29 million Americans meet the clinical criteria for alcohol use disorder.
- [Heroin: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/heroin/): Heroin is an illicit semi-synthetic opioid derived from morphine that crosses the blood-brain barrier faster than any other opioid compound, producing an intense euphoric rush that triggers physical dependence within days and addiction in a significant proportion of users.
- [Fentanyl Addiction: Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Withdrawal, Treatment and Prevention](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/fentanyl/): Fentanyl is a fully synthetic opioid 50–100 times more potent than morphine that binds to mu-opioid receptors to suppress pain and produce intense euphoria — and in its illicitly manufactured form, it has become the single deadliest drug in the history of the United States overdose crisis.
- [Oxycodone: Definitions, Effects, Overdose, Addiction & Treatment](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/drug-addiction/oxycodone/): Oxycodone is a Schedule II semisynthetic opioid that binds mu-opioid receptors to relieve moderate-to-severe pain and trigger dopamine-driven euphoria, fueling the U.S. opioid crisis. Since 1999, opioids — led by oxycodone — have caused over 500,000 deaths, with OxyContin’s aggressive marketing accelerating misuse.
- [What Are the Gambling Addiction Stages?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/gambling-addiction-stages/): According to the National Council of Problem Gambling, an estimated 2.5 million U.S. adults are estimated to meet the criteria for a severe gambling problem each year. This staggering statistic showcases just how prevalent gambling addiction can be, with millions more individuals struggling with mild to moderate gambling problems.
- [7 Importance of Nutrition for Addiction Recovery](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/nutrition-for-addiction-recovery/): The Importance of Nutrition for Addiction Recovery include repairing organ and tissue damage caused by substance use, restoring neurotransmitter balance, rebuilding gut health and the gut-brain connection, reducing cravings and relapse risk, stabilizing mood and managing withdrawal, supporting cognitive function, and establishing a foundation for long-term healthy habits.
- [How to Build a Sober Routine](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/sober-routine/): To build a sober routine is to replace the disordered, substance-centered patterns of addiction with a structured daily framework that actively supports abstinence, mental health, and long-term recovery. Building a sober routine requires establishing consistent sleep and wake times, creating a structured morning routine, incorporating daily exercise, planning nutritious meals at regular intervals, scheduling therapy and peer support activities, filling unstructured time with purposeful activities, and practicing daily mindfulness or gratitude.
- [10 Ways to Build Resilience in Addiction Recovery](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/building-resilience/): The key ways to build resilience in addiction recovery are evidence-based behavioral, cognitive, and social strategies that strengthen a person's capacity to resist cravings, manage triggers, and sustain sobriety through the inevitable challenges of long-term recovery.
- [Can You Overcome Cocaine Addiction Without Rehab?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/can-you-overcome-cocaine-addiction-without-rehab/): No — while some individuals achieve cocaine sobriety without formal treatment, the data shows that attempting to overcome cocaine addiction without professional support significantly reduces long-term success and increases risk of relapse, severe psychological withdrawal, and overdose.
- [Can You Detox at Home?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/can-you-detox-at-home/): No — detoxing at home from alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids without medical supervision is not safe, and in severe cases of dependence it is directly life-threatening; while some individuals with mild dependence may be able to complete a structured, medically guided outpatient detox at home, unsupervised home detox — defined as self-managed withdrawal without clinical oversight, prescribed medication, or daily monitoring — carries acute risks of seizure, DTs, cardiac complication, and death that no amount of preparation at home can adequately address.
- [What is Blocking Beliefs with EMDR Therapy?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/blocking-beliefs-emdr/): Blocking beliefs in EMDR therapy are deeply ingrained negative cognitions — about the self, the trauma, or the healing process itself — that interrupt or halt the brain's natural trauma reprocessing during active EMDR treatment, preventing the reduction of distress and the installation of adaptive beliefs that the therapy is designed to produce. The critical dimensions of blocking beliefs with EMDR therapy include what blocking beliefs are, how they differ from negative cognitions, why they form, the most common types and examples, how they are identified during treatment, the clinical tools used to address them, and how resolving them enables full trauma processing.
- [Does EMDR Make You Tired?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/does-emdr-make-you-tired/): Many people struggle with unresolved trauma. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, most people experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. Left untreated, lingering trauma can harm virtually all areas of your life for the worse. From negatively impacting your physical and mental health to interfering with your relationships, and more. This is why it’s crucial if you suspect you may be struggling with unresolved trauma to seek professional treatment.
- [Can Alcohol Affect Male Fertility?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/can-alcohol-affect-male-fertility/): Yes — alcohol directly affects male fertility by disrupting the hormonal axis that governs sperm production, damaging sperm quality, reducing testosterone, impairing sexual function, and generating oxidative stress within the reproductive system — with damage that is dose-dependent, meaning heavier drinking produces more severe reproductive consequences. The dimensions of alcohol's impact on male fertility include how alcohol disrupts the HPG hormonal axis, how it reduces testosterone production, how it impairs sperm parameters, how it causes oxidative stress and DNA damage in sperm, how it causes sexual dysfunction, how it affects IVF and conception outcomes, and whether fertility recovers after stopping alcohol.
- [How Many Women Struggle With Drinking?](https://worthywellnesscenter.com/how-many-women-struggle-with-drinking/): According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 11.2 million females ages 12 and older — or 7.6% of all females in that age group — had AUD in the past year in the United States, and that number represents a decades-long upward trend that has narrowed — and in some metrics erased — the historical gap between men's and women's drinking rates. The dimensions of women's alcohol problem include overall AUD prevalence, rising drinking rates and trends, why women develop AUD faster through the telescoping effect, the health consequences unique to women, co-occurring mental health conditions, barriers to treatment, and what effective women-specific treatment looks like.
